August 9, 1985Steven Allen Thompson was born in 1964. He grew up in a small community, and not much is known about his early childhood or family life. As a young person, Thompson had a difficult upbringing and faced various challenges. He eventually joined the Navy but was later reported as absent without leave (AWOL).
Before his later conviction, Thompson also had interactions with the law. The exact details of his early life and the events leading up to his criminal actions are limited. He lived in Huntsville, Alabama, where his life would take a tragic turn in 1984, a time that would define his legacy in a grim way.
Thompson's life ended when he was executed by electrocution in Alabama on May 8, 1998, but the details leading to this conclusion began long before that, rooted in a troubled past and personal struggles.
On May 12, 1984, Steven Allen Thompson killed Robin Balarzs in Huntsville, Alabama. He entered her home after being invited by a friend and engaged in normal conversation with her and a friend. Later, while they were alone, Thompson attacked Balarzs. He bound and gagged her with items he had brought, then beat, raped, and stabbed her. He also robbed her of one dollar and her engagement ring.
After the attack, Thompson dragged Balarzs's body about 3,000 feet behind his car to a secluded area known as Green Mountain. During this time, he continued to inflict harm on her. Once there, he did further violence to her before leaving her body at the scene.
The next day, on May 13, Thompson was apprehended by police. Officers noticed his vehicle was dirty, and he appeared to have blood and mud on him. Initially, Thompson denied knowing what had happened to Balarzs, but eventually, he confessed to his crimes and led police to the location of her body.
Thompson was arrested and charged with murder. On August 9, 1985, he was convicted of robbery-murder, kidnapping-murder, and rape-murder. Although the jury recommended a sentence of life without parole, the trial judge overrode this recommendation and sentenced him to death by electrocution.
Thompson was executed on May 8, 1998, after waiving any last-minute appeals. He stated that he wanted to spare pain to both his family and the victim's family.
