Bio

Stephen Michael West was born on September 16, 1962, in a mental institution in Tennessee. His mother was hospitalized at the time of his birth. West faced challenges early in life. He grew up in a family that struggled with mental illness and severe issues, including a history of child abuse. His father was an alcoholic who denied paternity, which meant that West did not have a stable family environment.

As a child, West experienced constant beatings and neglect. He did not have many positive influences during his early years. His childhood was marked by violence and instability, which affected his mental health. Because of his difficult upbringing, he had no prior criminal record before his arrest in connection with the events that would later define his life.

West's life took a turn when he entered his teenage years. He did not have a particularly notable academic background, and his later experiences in his youth were marked by his interactions with peers and employment. For a time, he worked at a local McDonald's in Lake City, Tennessee, where he met Ronnie Martin. The two became acquainted but had known each other for only a short period before the significant events that would follow.

In adulthood, West faced ongoing psychiatric issues, including auditory hallucinations. These problems emerged more clearly as he faced legal challenges later in life. His complicated background of childhood abuse and neglect likely contributed to his mental health struggles as he grew older.

Murder Story

On March 17, 1986, Stephen Michael West and his co-defendant Ronnie Martin committed the murders of Wanda Romines and her 15-year-old daughter Sheila in Union County, Tennessee. After the pair left work at McDonald's, they began drinking and driving around in Martin's car. They drove to the Romines' home at around 5:20 a.m., after Mr. Romines had left for work. Martin knocked on the door while West stood nearby. When Wanda opened the door, they entered the house.

Between 6:00 a.m. and 8:30 a.m., both victims were brutally murdered. Sheila was raped before she was killed. Forensic evidence later indicated that the victims suffered multiple stab wounds, which were described as "torture-type" wounds. The two defendants were arrested the next day after the bodies were discovered.

West and Martin were tried separately. West pleaded not guilty but acknowledged that he was present during the crimes. He claimed he did not participate in the actual violence against the victims. During the trial, the judge did not allow the jury to hear a tape recording of Martin confessing to the murders. This tape had been made while Martin was in custody and implicated himself as the sole killer.

On March 25, 1987, West was sentenced to death. His co-defendant, Martin, who was a minor at the time, received two life sentences instead. West's defense argued that he did not have a prior criminal record and that various mitigating factors, including childhood abuse and mental illness, were not adequately presented during his trial. West was later diagnosed with several severe mental health issues while in prison.

The judicial process acknowledged that the evidence pointed towards Martin as the more aggressive participant in the crime. Nevertheless, West faced the death penalty while his co-defendant did not due to his age. West's conviction and sentence were affirmed through multiple appeals, raising questions about the fairness and application of the death penalty in this case.
