February 23, 1988Stephen Leroy Nefstad was born on February 1, 1954, in the United States. Nefstad spent most of his life in Oregon, where he engaged in criminal activities.
On March 13, 1987, Stephen Leroy Nefstad, along with his accomplice Reyes Miranda, murdered Steven A. Jackson in Multnomah County, Oregon. The two men attacked Jackson while attempting to rob him of his pickup truck and bank card. During the attack, Jackson sustained 37 knife wounds primarily to his legs and chest.
After Jackson was killed, his body was disposed of in a gorge in Vancouver, Washington. A medical examiner later testified that Jackson had suffered fatal stab wounds to his heart and lung. These injuries would have caused his death within minutes.
Nefstad and Miranda were identified as the last people seen with Jackson when he left a bar in Oregon. Shortly after the attack, Miranda was caught on a surveillance camera withdrawing $200 from Jackson's bank account using his card. When found, Miranda's car was covered in the victim's blood.
Nefstad was arrested and faced trial for the murder. He was sentenced to death on February 23, 1988. However, his sentence was later overturned based on a U.S. Supreme Court ruling in 1989. Eventually, his sentence was commuted to life in prison.
