murder story

Stanislav Ivanovich Rogolev was a serial killer in the Soviet Union, operating mainly in Latvia from 1980 to 1982. He attacked a total of 21 women during this period, resulting in the deaths of 10 of them. His criminal activities drew significant attention from the police and the public, creating an atmosphere of fear.

Rogolev’s first known sexual crime occurred before the 1980s. In October 1980, he committed a sexual assault with an accomplice. On October 26, he threatened a 17-year-old girl with a knife and attempted to drag her into nearby woods, but she escaped. Later, on November 8, he stabbed a 44-year-old woman in Salaspils, but she survived.

On November 18, he beat and raped another woman, who also managed to escape. Just a week later, Rogolev attacked and stabbed a 27-year-old woman near Lielupe station, but she fought back, and he fled when others approached. In December 1980, he raped an 18-year-old girl near her home.

As the new year approached, Rogolev and his accomplice dragged a 34-year-old woman into the forest, where they raped and murdered her. In March 1981, he robbed and killed a 47-year-old woman. A month later, he took advantage of a drunk woman, raped her, and then killed her.

In July 1981, Rogolev attacked a 16-year-old girl after trying to kill a man in self-defense. He later invited a 43-year-old vacationer to his apartment, where he raped, robbed, and strangled her. On August 27, he brutally attacked a 24-year-old woman who had just disembarked from a train, delivering around 80 blows. Initially, three other men were charged for this crime until Rogolev confessed.

After several more attacks in 1981 and early 1982, the police formed a special task force to capture him. They believed he had information about their investigation, which helped him evade capture for a time. Eventually, police took fingerprints from bottles at a bar where Rogolev had been, leading to his identification.

Rogolev was eventually detained by two young officers who were unaware of an unofficial order not to take him alive. He tried to escape but was overpowered. Evidence from his apartment confirmed his involvement in the crimes, and he confessed after his arrest.

A psychiatric evaluation deemed him sane, despite his lawyer arguing that past trauma had affected his mental state. Stanislav Rogolev faced a trial, was sentenced to death, and was executed by firing squad on June 19, 1984. His case was led by investigator Jānis Skrastiņš.
