— Shayd Robinson
Shayd Robinson was born in 1991. He grew up in Stokes Valley, a suburb in Wellington, New Zealand. His family life was challenging. Shayd had a difficult upbringing in a rough neighborhood. His parents struggled with drug use, which created an unstable home environment.
Shayd's father, Tom Robinson, had a history of violence and was convicted of manslaughter. This family pattern of aggression extended to Shayd's grandfather, Benjamin Robinson, who had also committed violent acts, including an armed robbery that left a man seriously injured.
As a child, Shayd faced many difficulties. He had once been attacked on the street in 2008, an experience that made him fearful and withdrawn. After that incident, Shayd began carrying a knife for protection.
On January 26, 2012, in Stokes Valley, Wellington, a road rage incident escalated into a violent confrontation. Shayd Robinson and another man, Axl Stark, were walking on the street when they took exception to Aaron Hadfield's driving. It was reported that Hadfield almost struck Stark as he turned quickly into the street. In response, Hadfield stopped his car and confronted the two men.
In the heated exchange that followed, Stark punched Hadfield through the car window. Both Robinson and Stark then began attacking Hadfield. During this struggle, Hadfield allegedly grabbed Robinson's hoodie. In what was later described as a reckless act, Robinson pulled out a knife and stabbed Hadfield in the chest. The knife penetrated Hadfield's heart and lung.
Witnesses at the scene reported that after the stabbing, Robinson reportedly licked the knife and made comments about enjoying the taste of Hadfield's blood. Hadfield, despite being injured, was helped by bystanders who attempted to stop the bleeding while waiting for emergency services. He was transported to the hospital but died from his injuries the following day.
Robinson was arrested on the same day as the murder. He denied intending to kill Hadfield and claimed he acted in self-defense. He was later found guilty of murder, leading to a life sentence with a minimum of ten years before parole.
