2003Shawn Windsor was born on November 29, 1963. Details about his early childhood are not widely documented. However, it is noted that he faced difficulties growing up. He was raised in a single-parent household by his mother, who struggled to provide for her family. Some sources mention that Windsor experienced physical abuse during his childhood.
In the early 1980s, Shawn met a girl named Angela. At the time, she was just 15 years old, and her family disapproved of their relationship. Despite this, they married and faced many challenges together. Their life was tough, as they often had little money and struggled to find stable housing. They sometimes slept outdoors or stayed with friends.
Angela and Shawn eventually had three children: two sons and a daughter. However, their marriage was marked by Shawn's abusive behavior. Initially, the abuse would only occur when he was drinking. He would shout, insult Angela, and sometimes become physically aggressive. Over time, Shawn's behavior escalated, leading to more serious acts of violence.
Angela recounted specific incidents of abuse, including one where Shawn injured her with a wrench. This habit of violent behavior extended to their children as well, with reports of him physically punishing them. In the 1990s, Angela's cousin Betty moved in with them. Unbeknownst to Angela, Betty would soon become romantically involved with Shawn, and their relationship would bring further complications.
After Angela and Shawn separated, Shawn raised Betty’s son, Corey, whom he married later on. However, Shawn's violent tendencies continued, and he faced legal consequences for his actions against Betty. Despite being ordered to stay away from her due to domestic violence, their troubled relationship only deepened in the years that followed.
As time went on, the situation at home grew increasingly dire. The years of abuse and domestic conflict set the stage for a tragic conclusion to their story.
On December 28, 2003, in Jefferson County, Kentucky, Shawn Windsor committed two murders. He stabbed his estranged wife, Betty Jean Windsor, and their 8-year-old son, Corey Windsor. At that time, there was a domestic violence order in place that required Windsor to stay at least 500 feet away from Betty. After the murders, he fled to Nashville, Tennessee, in his wife's car. He left the car abandoned in a hospital parking garage.
Windsor was on the run for around nine months. He was captured on July 15, 2004, in Shelby, North Carolina. His capture was partly due to viewers of the television show "America's Most Wanted," who recognized his picture and reported his whereabouts. Police had found Betty's car in Nashville several weeks before his arrest, which led to tips that helped track him down.
Following his arrest, Windsor faced charges for the murders. On November 17, 2006, he was sentenced to death. During his sentencing hearing, Windsor admitted to killing Betty and Corey and stated that he accepted his punishment. He expressed a desire for the harshest punishment possible, which was the death penalty.
