Bio

Shawn Tyson was born on March 19, 1995, in Sarasota, Florida. He grew up in a neighborhood known for its challenges, including high levels of poverty and crime. Tyson experienced a difficult childhood and was considered to have a troubled home life. As he grew older, he faced various issues, including dropping out of school.

By the time he was a teenager, Tyson became involved in a life of crime. He had a history of weapon-related incidents. For example, on April 7, 2011, just days before the tragic events for which he would later be arrested, Tyson was accused of firing a gun at a vehicle during a disagreement with another youth. After this incident, concerns were raised by the courts about his potential danger to the community.

Despite these concerns, Tyson was released from custody on the evening of April 15, 2011, hours before he allegedly committed serious crimes. This decision was met with criticism, as it was noted that a judge had previously warned he should remain in custody. This series of prosecutorial mistakes and miscommunications was cited as a significant issue in the case that would follow.

Tyson was known to carry a firearm and was described as often firing it into the air for fun. He had a close group of friends and spent a lot of time socializing in his neighborhood. However, his involvement with guns and violence shaped his teenage years significantly, leading him further down a path of crime. At the time of the incidents for which he was later charged, he was just 16 years old. Tyson's life would take a dramatic turn as he faced serious legal consequences for his actions.

Murder Story

On April 16, 2011, in Sarasota, Florida, Shawn Tyson shot and killed two British tourists, James Cooper and James Kouzaris. The two men, aged 25 and 24, had been out drinking and had wandered into the Newtown neighborhood, a known crime area. Witnesses stated that they saw Tyson and another young man watching Cooper and Kouzaris before hearing multiple gunshots.

After Tyson attempted to rob the tourists and realized they had little money, he shot them both. Reports indicated that James Kouzaris begged for his life, but Tyson shot him anyway. Both men were later found shirtless and with their pants pulled down to their thighs.

After the shooting, neighbors saw Tyson running from the scene and climbing through a window into his house. He allegedly confessed to killing the men to a friend. This friend later helped bury shell casings from the shooting. Police recovered the casings and linked them to a .22 caliber revolver, but the murder weapon itself was never found.

Tyson was arrested hours after the shooting and faced charges as an adult due to the severity of the crime. His trial began in 2012, where evidence of his DNA on one of the victim's clothing was presented. He was found guilty of first-degree murder on March 29, 2012, and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
