December 16, 2008Sean Mercer was born on September 17, 1990, and grew up in Croxteth, Liverpool, England. He was 16 years old when he shot and killed 11-year-old Rhys Jones in August 2007. Before the murder, Mercer was already known to police. Reports said officers had stopped him many times, and he was under an anti-social behaviour order linked to trouble at a local sports centre. He also had a previous conviction for possessing a CS gas canister.
Mercer was connected to the Croxteth Crew, a Liverpool gang involved in a violent feud with the rival Strand Gang from Norris Green. Rhys Jones was not connected to any gang. He was an innocent child walking home from football practice when he was caught in the shooting. Prosecutors said Mercer was trying to shoot rival gang members, but one of the bullets struck Rhys instead.
On August 22, 2007, 11-year-old Rhys Jones was walking home from football practice in Croxteth, Liverpool. He was crossing the car park of the Fir Tree pub when Sean Mercer arrived on a bicycle.
Mercer was a member of the Croxteth Crew gang. Prosecutors said he was trying to shoot members of the rival Strand Gang. Rhys was not involved in any gang activity and was only passing through the area.
Mercer fired three shots across the car park. One bullet struck Rhys. His mother, Melanie Jones, rushed to the scene after hearing what had happened. Paramedics tried to save him, and he was taken to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, but he died from his injuries.
After the shooting, Mercer fled and tried to hide the evidence. Other gang members helped him get rid of the gun, clothing, and bicycle connected to the murder. Mercer was later charged with murder on April 15, 2008. At trial, he denied killing Rhys and claimed he was somewhere else, but the jury rejected his defense.
On December 16, 2008, Sean Mercer was found guilty of murder. The next day, he was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 22 years. Several other gang members were also convicted for helping him cover up the crime. Rhys’s murder shocked the United Kingdom and brought major attention to youth gang violence and gun crime in Liverpool. Mercer remains imprisoned under a life sentence.
