— Scott Andrew Mink
Scott Andrew Mink was born on October 13, 1963. By 2000, he was living with his elderly parents, William and Sheila Mink, in a second-floor duplex apartment in Union, Ohio, near Dayton. At the time, William was 79 years old and Sheila was 72.
Mink struggled with drug and alcohol abuse while living with his parents. Court records state that his drug use increased over time, and his parents tried to control his behavior by setting limits and restricting access to his truck. They sometimes hid his car keys to stop him from leaving the home to buy drugs or alcohol.
On September 19, 2000, Mink became angry after discovering that his parents had hidden his keys. That conflict led to the fatal attack on both William and Sheila Mink while they were in their bedroom.
On September 19, 2000, Scott Andrew Mink was living with his parents, William and Sheila Mink, in Union, Ohio. His parents had hidden his car keys because they were trying to stop him from leaving the house to buy drugs or alcohol. Mink became angry and went into their bedroom while they were sleeping.
Mink attacked both parents with a claw hammer. He beat them until the hammer broke. He then used cutting boards to continue the assault, and those also broke during the attack.
After that, Mink stabbed both William and Sheila with kitchen knives. Sheila Mink was also strangled with an electrical cord. Both victims died from the attack.
After killing his parents, Mink stole their credit cards and personal belongings. He sold some of their possessions and used the money to buy crack cocaine.
The bodies of William and Sheila Mink were discovered four days later, after family members went to check on them and contacted police. Mink later turned himself in and confessed to killing his parents.
Mink pleaded guilty to the charges before a three-judge panel. He also asked to receive the death penalty. On June 29, 2001, the court sentenced him to death for the murders of William and Sheila Mink.
Under Ohio law, death sentences are automatically reviewed even when the defendant does not want to appeal. On April 14, 2004, the Supreme Court of Ohio upheld Mink’s convictions and death sentence. The court ruled that he had been competent when he pleaded guilty and chose not to present evidence for a life sentence instead.
Scott Andrew Mink was executed by lethal injection in Ohio on July 20, 2004. Before his execution, he said he had made peace with his family and with God. He was pronounced dead after the lethal injection was carried out.
