murder story

On October 6, 1987, Scott Allen Hain and his accomplice Robert Lambert committed a carjacking in Tulsa, Oklahoma. They took an automobile that was occupied by Michael Houghton and Laura Sanders. After stealing the car, they stopped it and robbed the two individuals. Hain and Lambert then placed Houghton and Sanders in the trunk of the vehicle.

Hain proceeded to set fire to the car, which led to the deaths of both Houghton and Sanders. The police arrested Hain and Lambert three days later, on October 9, 1987.

In 1988, during their trial, Hain and Lambert were convicted of capital felony murder. They both received a death sentence by lethal injection. In 1994, an appeals court found that the jury had not been informed about the possibility of a life sentence without parole. This resulted in Hain receiving a new sentencing hearing. However, the new jury again sentenced him to death.

After numerous appeals, all were dismissed. In February 2002, the United States Supreme Court declined to hear Hain's appeal, which argued against executing juvenile offenders. In February 2003, the U.S. Supreme Court lifted a stay of execution that had been issued by a lower court. Hain was executed by lethal injection on April 3, 2003, at the age of 32.

Scott Hain became the 22nd juvenile offender executed in the United States since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976. He was also the last person executed for crimes committed as a minor before a ruling in 2005 outlawed such executions.
