Murder Story

On 31 December 2017, six people died in the Novi Iskar shooting in Bulgaria. The attack took place in Novi Iskar and is known as the Novi Iskar shooting.

At 19:30, Katya "Kathy" Kyukhova went for a walk with her dog. Both Kyukhova and her dog were murdered on this walk by Rosen Zhelev Angelov. The exact time of her death is unknown.

At about 22:00, Kathy's relatives began to worry about her absence. At about 23:00, Angelov arrived at Kyukhova's home with her body. There he shot and killed five of her family members with a handgun. He left traces by tracking through the victims' blood and tried to erase them. He then drove off in Kyukhova's jeep with her body. He threw her body into a nearby well and cleaned the fingerprints from the car before abandoning it. A pistol with a silencer was used during the killings, so neighbors did not hear any noise.

On 2 January, Katya Kyukhova's brother called the police after he could not contact his relatives. Police arrived at the house and found the five bodies. On 3 January, Angelov was declared wanted for the murders. His home in the village of Lukovo was searched and a computer with child pornography was found. He moved to an abandoned villa near his home.

On 4 January, Angelov shot and killed himself with a pistol. A tablet and a phone were found near him, and he had viewed more child pornography from those devices. His body was found on 7 January.

Rosen Zhelev Angelov was born on 24 April 1964 in the village of Dropla. He had an older brother and a younger sister. He worked as a taxi driver in Sofia for more than 10 years. He had past convictions, including vandalism, looting with a gang in the 1980s, a 1997 rape sentence, and a 2009 sentence for having sex with a 12-year-old. He served time in prison for some of these convictions. Acquaintances called him "Forester." He lived in isolation, had no permanent job or housing, and was fond of weapons. Parts of grenades were found in his house. He was active on Facebook.

Angelov met Katya Kyukhova and they dated for a time. He asked her for keys and alarm access to houses she cleaned so he could rob them. Kyukhova did not give him access and the two parted a few days before the shooting. According to the research, he killed the woman's family so there would be no witnesses.

Kathy's brother filed a lawsuit against the prosecutor's office over the deaths of Kathy and his mother. He argued that Angelov should have been in prison at the time of the shooting. Angelov's eight-year sentence took effect on 22 December 2009 and was to last until 4 January 2018. Prosecutors were ordered to pay Kathy's brother compensation of 50,000 levs for Kathy's death and 30,000 levs for his mother's death. Kathy's niece's lawsuit was dismissed.
