Pollard's life took a significant turn in the 1980s when he became involved in a series of events leading to his criminal activities. At age 21, Pollard became involved in a crime.

After a long series of developments, he was sentenced to death for a murder committed in 1985. However, his death sentence was later commuted to life in prison.

Murder Story

On the morning of December 12, 1985, Roosevelt Pollard and three friends were traveling from St. Louis, Missouri, to visit family in Arkansas. While driving on Interstate 55, their car battery died. Pollard took a .22 caliber automatic rifle from his truck and loaded it with ammunition. After finding a replacement battery at a nearby farm, they returned to the car and resumed their journey.

Later, they encountered a flat tire and stopped at a rest area near Steele, Missouri. Pollard's friends went to buy a new tire, leaving Pollard behind. Shortly after, Richard E. Alford arrived at the rest area in his new Pontiac Bonneville and parked near Pollard. Pollard expressed his desire to take Alford's car.

As Alford was about to leave, Pollard shot him through the window of his car multiple times. Afterward, Pollard moved Alford's body to the driver's seat and drove away in the stolen vehicle. He returned to the rest area about twelve to thirteen minutes later to check on his friends, then left again in Alford's car.

Pollard and his friends spent the night in Blytheville, Arkansas. During this time, Pollard stole a ring from Alford's hand and later sold it at a pawn shop. Alford's body was eventually discovered in a drainage ditch near the rest area.

Pollard was arrested and charged with murder. He was sentenced to death on January 27, 1986. Later, his sentence was commuted to life in prison after he was declared mentally incompetent. He remains on the capital punishment list, subject to re-evaluation of his mental condition.
