— Ronnie Paul Threadgill
Ronnie Paul Threadgill was born on February 20, 1973, in Dallas, Texas. He grew up in a challenging environment marked by instability and poverty. His family faced hardships, which contributed to a turbulent childhood. Threadgill's early life experiences included negative influences and difficulties, which shaped his future.
As a young man, Threadgill encountered legal troubles. By the time he reached adulthood, he had begun to develop a criminal record. He was involved in various criminal activities, including drug-related offenses and burglary, leading to his first prison sentence. In 1994, he received a ten-year sentence for possession of cocaine and burglary. This marked the beginning of a series of incarcerations that would continue throughout his life.
Threadgill had a history of multiple arrests and convictions for various crimes, including assaults, theft, and resisting arrest. He frequently cycled in and out of the penal system, and much of his adult life was spent behind bars. Throughout these years, he was described by authorities as having a "bad" reputation in the community.
On April 14, 2001, in Navarro County, Texas, Ronnie Paul Threadgill shot and killed 17-year-old Dexter McDonald. The incident occurred outside a nightclub called Pleasure Garden Club after a birthday party. Three young men were getting into a car when Threadgill approached and fired two shots into the vehicle. One shot did not strike anyone, but the second shot hit McDonald, passing through his arm and into his chest.
After the shooting, Threadgill entered the driver's seat of the car and drove away. He briefly stopped at a stop sign, pulled McDonald from the car, and left him on the ground. Witnesses saw the shooting and provided descriptions of Threadgill. As police pursued him, he drove on Interstate 45 but lost control of the car and crashed into a ditch. He then fled on foot and hid under a parked semi-trailer at a truck stop. Authorities caught him there, and a bandana he had worn was found nearby.
McDonald was taken to a hospital but was pronounced dead as a result of his injuries. Threadgill was arrested the same day and later charged with capital murder. The trial began in July 2002. Witnesses testified against Threadgill, and forensic evidence linked him to the crime. On July 22, 2002, he was found guilty and sentenced to death.
Threadgill's appeals were unsuccessful, and he was eventually executed by lethal injection on April 16, 2013. In his final statement, he expressed love for his family and friends and stated he was ready for what lay ahead. He was pronounced dead at 6:39 PM that day.
