March 16, 1985Ronald D. Schackart was born on December 2, 1962. He grew up in Pima County, Arizona, where he attended school. Ronald was a student at the University of Arizona, where he met Charla Regan. They became friends while attending high school together and continued their friendship into college.
During his early life, Ronald faced several challenges. He had a difficult relationship with his parents, which eventually led to him being kicked out of their home. At some point, he enlisted in the army. After his military service, he returned home to find his life in disarray. Ronald claimed that he found his wife involved with another man and was later accused of raping her. He denied these allegations.
By March 1984, Ronald had no place to stay. He reached out to Charla, telling her about his troubles and that he needed a place to live temporarily. Charla, wanting to help him as a friend, agreed to meet with him. They went to a Holiday Inn in Tucson, Arizona, where they talked about his issues. Their friendship, which had begun in high school, was a significant part of both their lives up to that point.
On March 8, 1984, Ronald D. Schackart and Charla Regan went to a Tucson Holiday Inn. Schackart told Regan that he needed a place to stay. He also mentioned that he wanted to talk about issues he was having with his wife.
In the hotel room, Schackart assaulted Regan at gunpoint. He struck her with the gun and strangled her to death. After the crime, he stuffed a sock into her mouth. Schackart then went to the home of his pastor. He confessed what he had done and later surrendered to the police, claiming he had not intended to kill her.
Following his arrest, Schackart faced serious charges, including sexual assault, kidnapping, and first-degree murder. His trial began on March 12, 1985. The jury found him guilty, and on May 3, 1985, he was sentenced to death.
The case went through the legal system, resulting in a resentencing on December 7, 1993. The Arizona Supreme Court upheld the death sentence after reviewing the circumstances of the case. Schackart has since filed various legal petitions in attempts to contest his conviction and death sentence.
