On March 22, 1989, Roderick Nunley and Michael Taylor committed a serious crime in Jackson County, Missouri. After using drugs, they stole a car and spotted a fifteen-year-old girl named Ann Harrison waiting for her school bus. Taylor expressed a desire to steal her purse, and Nunley stopped the car. Taylor spoke to Ann and then forced her into the vehicle.
After kidnapping her, they drove to Nunley's mother’s house. Once there, they forced Ann to crawl into the basement. Taylor raped her, and Nunley provided assistance during this assault. Afterward, they put her in the trunk of the stolen car, tying her up to ensure she could not escape.
Feeling that Ann might identify them, the two men decided to murder her. Nunley retrieved two knives from the kitchen. Both men then stabbed Ann multiple times. After the stabbing, they drove to a nearby neighborhood and parked the car, leaving her to die in the trunk.
On May 14, 1991, Roderick Nunley was sentenced to death for the murder of Ann Harrison. He also faced charges of armed criminal action, kidnapping, and forcible rape.
