February 6, 1993Roderick Michael Orme was born on November 24, 1961. He grew up in Florida. He became involved with drugs, particularly cocaine. It is reported that he struggled with substance abuse for many years. This addiction significantly affected his life and choices. Roderick's life took a serious turn when he started engaging in criminal activities.
Roderick's life transformed drastically when he committed his first and only known murder on March 3, 1992.
On March 3, 1992, Roderick Michael Orme invited Lisa Redd, a nurse, to his motel room in Bay County, Florida. He was experiencing a problematic high after freebasing cocaine and called her for assistance. Lisa arrived at his room sometime between 7:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m.
During the visit, a conflict occurred when Lisa knocked the crack pipe from Orme's hand, which caused him to lose his drugs. Orme claimed that Lisa also disposed of some of the crack into the toilet. Following the argument, he took Lisa's purse and keys and left her at the motel.
The next morning, Lisa Redd's body was discovered in the motel room. She had been severely beaten, and the cause of death was ruled as strangulation. After being released from a recovery center on March 6, 1992, Orme was arrested. Evidence collected included DNA from the victim’s underpants that matched Orme's, his fingerprints found in the motel, and his wallet located in Lisa's car.
Roderick Orme was charged with first-degree murder, robbery, and sexual battery. He pleaded not guilty but was found guilty on all counts by a jury on February 6, 1993. The jury recommended the death penalty by a vote of 7-5. He was sentenced to death on March 25, 1993.
Orme's appeals were filed with various courts, including the Florida Supreme Court and the United States Supreme Court, but many were denied. Over the years, he maintained that there was insufficient evidence to convict him. However, he was ultimately sentenced to death due to the severe nature of the crimes.
