murder story

Robert Willard Liberty was involved in several murders spanning from 1966 to 1970. His first murder occurred on June 4, 1966, when he killed his girlfriend, Marcella Landis. After strangling her with a silk stocking, he dressed her body, applied makeup, and positioned her on a couch. He lit candles around her and placed a Bible on her chest. When police arrived, they found Liberty playing a guitar next to her body.

Liberty spent time in a mental hospital after being declared insane for Landis' murder. He was released in 1969 and had a brief period of freedom before killing again. On March 12, 1970, he shot his roommate, Thomas Astorina, in their apartment, and later fled to avoid arrest.

On June 6, 1970, Liberty and his partner kidnapped a teenager and forced him to take them to Liberty's mother’s house. After robbing her, they moved to San Diego, where they broke into the apartment of Robert Irion. Liberty tied up Irion and another hostage, then beat Irion to death. He displayed the body on the floor and lit candles around it. He wrote on the door, claiming responsibility for the murder.

After these killings, a manhunt was launched for Liberty. He was eventually arrested on June 9, 1970, after committing more crimes in Colorado. While awaiting trial for these murders, Liberty was killed in prison by another inmate on January 20, 1971.
