— Robert Newland
Robert Newland was born in April 1943 in Springfield, Ohio. His parents were heavy drinkers, and his mother consumed alcohol throughout her pregnancy with him. This led to a chaotic childhood marked by violence. Newland often faced beatings from his mother when she was drunk. He sought refuge at his uncle's house, but there he was subjected to sexual abuse starting at a young age.
By the time he was 12, Newland had begun drinking alcohol heavily as a means to escape his troubled life. This contributed to a marked decline in his school performance. He experienced a significant drop in IQ from seventh to tenth grade, which paralleled his substance abuse. Amidst all this turmoil, at the age of 16, Newland ran away from home, determined never to return.
After leaving home, he began a life of transience, moving constantly and supporting himself by working in carpentry. However, his life remained tumultuous. Newland sustained several head injuries while working in construction and from a serious car accident, resulting in brain damage. His ongoing abuse of alcohol and drugs further complicated his mental health. Despite these challenges, by the early 1980s, he settled in St. Simons Island, Georgia, where he lived with his girlfriend, Peggy Beggs.
In St. Simons Island, Newland appeared to manage his substance use better with Beggs' support. However, in the summer of 1986, he relapsed after consuming a large quantity of vodka. This night would become pivotal in his life. As a person described as friendly when sober, his extreme alcohol consumption changed his behavior and led to tragic events.
On May 30, 1986, Robert Newland, after a night of drinking, approached his neighbor Carol Beatty at her home in Glynn County, Georgia. He asked her to come outside. When she did, Newland attempted to kiss her. Beatty rejected his advances and told him to go home. Newland, angered by her refusal, also attempted to kiss her again. When she scratched and slapped him, he lost control.
In a moment of rage, Newland pulled out a knife and attacked her, stabbing her multiple times and slashing her throat. Carol screamed for help during the assault. After the attack, Newland ran back to his house, discarding the knife along the way.
Carol Beatty was found lying in her backyard, severely injured. She was rushed to the hospital, where, despite her critical state, she managed to identify Newland as her attacker before she succumbed to her injuries. Just after her identification, authorities arrested Newland at his residence. He initially denied involvement in the crime but later confessed to killing Beatty after expressing remorse for his actions.
Following a trial, Newland was convicted of murder and aggravated assault with intent to rape. In 1987, he was sentenced to death. After years of appeals, Newland was executed by lethal injection on March 10, 2009, in Georgia.
