Robert Joseph Silveria Jr. committed a series of murders across several states in the United States from 1981 to 1996. His first known victim was Darren Royal Miller, found dead on July 8, 1992, in Thompson Springs, Utah. Miller had severe head injuries after partying with friends near a pond.
On April 28, 1994, Silveria killed Willie James Clark in Tallahassee, Florida. Clark was homeless but worked as a bell ringer for the Salvation Army. He suffered a fatal blow to the head during a robbery.
Michael A. Garfinkle was murdered on August 2, 1994, in Emeryville, California. Garfinkle had recently graduated and planned to travel to Santa Cruz. Silveria later confessed to this crime, showing a deep knowledge of the details.
Roger Lee Bowman was found dead on April 21, 1995, in Salt Lake City, Utah. He had last been seen walking his dog along train tracks. Silveria confessed to beating and stabbing Bowman, having already been identified as a suspect.
James E. McLean was found murdered on July 23, 1995, in Albany, Oregon. Silveria met McLean along the railroad tracks and confessed to stabbing him. After the murder, Silveria took McLean’s money.
On July 28, 1995, Charles Randall Boyd was found dead in a collapsed tent at a campground in Kansas. Boyd had met Silveria while building a bunkhouse in Texas, and they later traveled together.
Silveria then killed Paul Wayne Matthews on October 15, 1995, in Whitefish, Montana. Following his arrest on March 2, 1996, he confessed to this murder.
William Avis Pettit Jr. was found dead on December 3, 1995, in a boxcar in Millersburg, Oregon, and Michael Andrew Clites was murdered on December 5, 1995, in Portland, Oregon.
When Silveria was arrested, police discovered items belonging to his victims in his possession. This included Pettit's backpack and Matthews' identification, which linked him to multiple murders. Silveria has since been convicted and is serving life sentences in prison.
