August 14, 1992Robert Charles Towery was born on July 20, 1964. He grew up in the United States, but specific details about his early childhood are not widely documented. Towery had a challenging life as he faced several difficulties. Reports indicate that he came from an abusive family background. His mother was overweight and diabetic, and he experienced physical and mental abuse during his upbringing.
Towery struggled with dyslexia and had a bed-wetting problem as a child. His family life contributed to difficulties in his young adult years. He became involved in criminal activities at a young age. By the time he reached adulthood, Towery had accumulated several convictions, including armed robbery.
On September 4, 1991, Robert Charles Towery and his accomplice, Randy Barker, went to the home of 68-year-old Mark Jones in Arizona to rob him. Jones, knowing Towery from a previous business encounter, let the two men inside the house. Once inside, Towery pulled out a gun and ordered Jones to be handcuffed by Barker. They proceeded to take valuable items from Jones’ home, including money and electronics, and loaded them into Jones' car.
After collecting the items, Towery and Barker led Jones to the bedroom at gunpoint. Towery told Jones that he was going to inject him with a substance that would make him sleep. Using a veterinary syringe filled with battery acid, Towery injected Jones. Although Jones appeared to pretend to sleep, Towery then attempted to strangle him using plastic ties. It took two attempts before they succeeded in killing Jones.
The next day, on September 5, 1991, Jones' body was discovered. Towery and Barker had abandoned Jones' car nearby and returned to their residence, where some of the stolen property was later found. Investigators arrested the two men based on a tip from the public, which led them to the evidence linking Towery and Barker to the crime.
Towery was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to death on November 20, 1992. After several appeals over the years, he was executed by lethal injection in Arizona on March 8, 2012.
