Bio

Robert Burns Springsteen IV was born on November 26, 1974, in Illinois. He grew up in a working-class family. His father worked as a drywall installer, and his mother was a homemaker. As a child, Robert was described as quiet and shy. He had a few close friends but generally kept to himself.

During his early years, Robert's family moved to Texas, where he spent most of his schooling. He attended McCallum High School in Austin, Texas. Though he struggled academically and did not excel in his studies, he dropped out before graduating. He held various jobs, working in food service and as a cook.

As a teenager, Robert experienced several personal issues, including problems with authority and relationships. Although he was not particularly known for being involved in criminal activity, he befriended others who had troubled backgrounds. His friendships during this time would later come under scrutiny due to the events that would unfold in his life.

By the time he reached adulthood, Robert had moved multiple times within Texas and West Virginia. He lived with his father and occasionally with friends. He married at a young age but maintained a mostly unstable lifestyle, working multiple jobs to support himself and his family.

In 1991, when Robert was just 17 years old, several significant events began to unfold that would eventually lead to his involvement in one of Texas's most notorious criminal cases.

Murder Story

On December 6, 1991, in Austin, Texas, four teenage girls were murdered in a yogurt shop called "I Can't Believe It's Yogurt!" The victims were 17-year-old Eliza Thomas, 13-year-old Amy Ayers, and two sisters, 17-year-old Jennifer and 15-year-old Sarah Harbison. The girls were seen at the shop as late as 10:00 PM that night, where they had planned to have a sleepover.

Around midnight, a police officer noticed smoke coming from the yogurt shop. Firefighters arrived and extinguished the fire. Once inside, they discovered the bodies of the four girls, who had been bound and gagged. Each had been shot in the head. Their bodies were stacked on top of each other, and it appeared that they had died before the fire was set.

Following the incident, the investigation spanned nearly eight years. During this time, police received numerous confessions from various individuals, including a known serial killer, Kenneth Allen McDuff. However, McDuff was ruled out as a suspect.

In October 1999, police arrested Robert Burns Springsteen IV, along with three others, including Michael James Scott and Maurice Pierce. They linked the suspects to the crime based on confessions obtained during interrogations. However, many questioned the validity of these confessions, suggesting they may have been coerced.

Springsteen was convicted in June 2001 and sentenced to death for his involvement in the murders. However, his conviction was later overturned in 2006 by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals due to unfair trial claims. In 2009, DNA tests revealed no match between the evidence and Springsteen or his co-defendants. Consequently, all charges were dismissed against him later that year.

Family members of the victims expressed ongoing concerns about the case, even after the charges were dropped. The murders in the yogurt shop remain one of Austin's most infamous criminal cases, leaving a long-lasting impact on the community.
