— Robert Anthony Martinez Perez
Robert Anthony Martinez Perez was born on June 29, 1958, in San Antonio, Texas. He grew up in a tough neighborhood known for gang activity and violence. He attended school only until the ninth grade before leaving for various reasons.
He became involved in the criminal underworld at a young age. His upbringing in a gang-prone area contributed to his early association with gang culture. As a young man, he found himself entrenched in the lifestyle and activities of street gangs in San Antonio.
At the age of 28, in 1986, Perez was involved in a violent incident where he stabbed a man multiple times during a domestic dispute. This act led to a conviction for attempted manslaughter, and he was sentenced to ten years in prison. He was released on parole in 1990 after serving some time, which marked the beginning of his tumultuous involvement in gang activities.
Following his release, Perez continued to have legal troubles. He faced further charges for aggravated assault and evading arrest, adding to his criminal record. Despite these setbacks, he would go on to become a prominent figure in the Mexican Mafia, a powerful prison gang.
By the mid-1990s, Perez had risen to a leadership position within the Mexican Mafia, commanding attention and respect among members of the gang. His life was marked by the violent conflicts and power struggles that characterized gang life during that time.
He was married and fathered eight children, reflecting his personal life alongside his criminal activities.
On April 17, 1994, Robert Anthony Martinez Perez was involved in a violent incident in San Antonio, Texas. He was part of the Mexican Mafia, a prison gang that was facing internal conflict at the time. After the gang’s president was sentenced to life in federal prison, a split occurred within the gang. Two factions formed, each vying for power.
While looking for Luis “Blue” Adames, who was preparing to challenge the gang's leadership, Perez and his supporters spotted a vehicle belonging to Adames. They returned to the area armed. Instead of finding Adames, they encountered his supporters, including Robert Rivas and Jose Travieso.
A shootout broke out. During this confrontation, Rivas and Travieso were shot and killed, while Jesse Travieso was wounded. This event was part of a larger struggle for control within the gang and highlighted the violent tactics used by its members.
Following this incident, Perez was arrested in November 1994. When officers searched his home, they found a significant amount of cash, jewelry, and ammunition. Perez's control within the gang increased over the following years, and he was linked to various other shootings and killings throughout San Antonio. He was charged and convicted in the murders of Rivas and Travieso.
In 1999, after a change of venue due to the high profile of the case, a jury found Perez guilty of capital murder. He received a death sentence for his crimes. His conviction was upheld by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals in 2001.
Throughout his time in prison, he faced additional charges and was connected to numerous other murders that took place during his leadership of the gang. After exhausting his appeals, Perez was executed by lethal injection on March 6, 2007. His final words were directed toward his family, expressing love and urging them to stay strong. He was pronounced dead at 6:17 p.m.
