1985Robert Allen Walls was born on August 3, 1965. He grew up in a challenging environment. Not much is known about his early family life, but he faced difficulties as a child. This may have influenced his later choices in life.
As a young man, Walls began to get into trouble with the law. In 1984, he was convicted of burglary in St. Charles County, Missouri. He received a sentence of three concurrent seven-year terms for this crime. This early involvement with crime set a pattern for his future.
After serving some time, he ended up in a halfway house, a place meant to help people transition back to society. While in this halfway house, he met other men who would later become part of his criminal activities. One of these men was Terry Wilson. They often talked about plans to escape their current lives and sought ways to make quick money.
Walls' life took a dramatic turn after he left the halfway house. He and his associates began to plot crimes together. This choice would lead to a tragic event for him and others.
On the night of December 5, 1985, Robert Allen Walls, along with Terry Wilson and Tommy Thomas, went to the home of 88-year-old Fred Harmon in Maplewood, Missouri. They planned to rob him based on Wilson's prior knowledge of the house. Wilson and Thomas broke in through a window, while Walls entered through a side door later. When Mr. Harmon recognized Wilson, he offered to give them anything if they would leave him alone.
During the confrontation, Thomas began kicking Mr. Harmon, while Walls suggested they tie him up. They struggled to restrain Mr. Harmon with neckties, and Walls held his head down. They then dragged Mr. Harmon to the kitchen and attempted to shove him into the freezer. Despite Mr. Harmon’s protests, he was forced upside down into the freezer.
After closing the freezer on him, the men placed a television and a chair on top to prevent his escape. They took around $100 from Mr. Harmon and then left the scene in his car. Three days later, on December 18, police discovered Mr. Harmon's body inside the freezer after neighbors reported they had not seen him.
An autopsy revealed multiple blunt force injuries on Mr. Harmon and that he died from a combination of blunt injuries, hypothermia, and suffocation. Walls was arrested on December 20, 1985, in Santa Monica, California, for burglary. Both he and Wilson were charged with Mr. Harmon's murder.
After a series of legal proceedings, Robert Allen Walls was convicted of first-degree murder, among other charges. He was sentenced to death in December 1986. His conviction went through multiple appeals, but ultimately, the Missouri Supreme Court affirmed his death sentence.
On June 30, 1999, Robert Allen Walls was executed by lethal injection.
