Robert Acremant was born in May 1968. He grew up in a regular family but faced many challenges in his life. He served in the Air Force, which was a significant period for him. After his service, he pursued education and earned a master's degree in Business Administration from Golden Gate University in San Francisco. Remarkably, he completed this degree in half the usual time.
After finishing school, Acremant found work as a district operations manager at Roadway Trucking in Los Angeles. He gained experience in the business field but later decided to leave this job to start his own software company. Unfortunately, the business did not succeed as he hoped, and he became frustrated with his financial situation. He had difficulty finding another job and felt unable to achieve the financial stability he desired.
His struggles were made worse by depression and personal issues. Acremant had feelings for a Las Vegas stripper named Alla Kosova, whom he thought of as his girlfriend. However, he was upset when she rejected him because he did not have enough money to visit her.
murder story
On December 4, 1995, Roxanne Ellis, 53, met Robert Acremant, 27, for an appointment to show him an apartment. Ellis called her daughter at 4:00 p.m. to say she would be going shopping. Later, her partner, Michelle Abdill, 42, left work to help Ellis who had trouble starting her car. When Abdill's brother and Ellis's daughter checked the apartment complex later, they found Abdill's vehicle and called the police after it looked out of place.
Four days later, cable workers reported a truck to the police after noticing it was abandoned. Police found the bodies of both women in the back of the truck. Both had been bound and gagged, and each suffered a gunshot wound to the head. The bodies were concealed with drapes and cardboard boxes.
The news of the murders alarmed the local gay community, as Ellis and Abdill were known activists for LGBTQ rights. Because of prior threats against the couple, there was concern that they were victims of a hate crime. The police released a composite sketch of a suspect based on a witness’s description. This led to a tip from Acremant’s mother, who suspected her son might be involved based on his behavior and resemblance to the sketch.
Acremant was located at a motel in Stockton and was arrested on December 13, 1995. Upon arrest, he confessed to killing Ellis and Abdill, claiming he had tried to rob them. According to Acremant, when they refused to comply, he shot them. He also admitted to killing Scott George in California before the murders of Ellis and Abdill.
Afterward, police found George's remains in an abandoned mine shaft based on Acremant's directions. Despite his initial claims of robbery as a motive, evidence showed that he left valuables behind at the scene of the murders.
Acremant later changed his statements about his motives. He wrote letters stating that knowing the victims were lesbians made it easier for him to commit the murders. He attempted to distance himself from those claims later, attributing his actions to sudden urges.
In 2007, during his trial, it was revealed that Acremant had a previous relationship with a dancer named Alla Kosova. He experienced financial troubles that led to the end of that relationship. After his confession to Kosova, he was arrested later that month.
Acremant was sentenced to death in 1997. His death sentence was upheld multiple times, but in 2011, it was changed to life without parole due to his mental state. He died in prison from natural causes on October 16, 2018. There was also a pending death sentence against him in California for George's murder.
