— Richard Vasquez
Richard Vasquez was born on April 17, 1979, in Nueces County, Texas. He grew up in a Hispanic household. Not much information is available about his early childhood or family life. However, it is known that he struggled with personal issues as he got older.
As a teenager, Richard faced challenges, including substance abuse. He became addicted to heroin and had several misdemeanor offenses in his past, although none were violent in nature. By the time he reached 18, Richard was already a father and had a three-month-old child with his girlfriend.
At the time of his arrest in 1998, Richard was working as a laborer. He had a limited education, having completed only up to the ninth grade. He lived in Corpus Christi at the time of the incident that led to his conviction. Richard did not have a prior prison record before this case.
On March 5, 1998, Richard Vasquez, who was 18 years old at the time, committed a crime in Nueces County, Texas. His victim was his four-year-old stepdaughter. During the day, Vasquez struck her multiple times on the head with a closed fist. Afterward, he sent her outside to play and then took a nap.
Later, Vasquez called the girl back inside to brush her teeth. To reach the sink, she used a small stool. While trying to get up, she fell off the stool and landed on her back. When Vasquez went into the bathroom, he found her lying there. The child was taken to the hospital, but she died the following day.
On June 24, 1999, Richard Vasquez was sentenced to death. He was convicted of murdering his stepdaughter, and the case was marked by serious accusations against him. Some people claimed he had also sexually assaulted her and injected her with cocaine. However, these allegations were disputed, and Vasquez maintained his innocence, stating the child’s death was accidental.
