— Richard Tucker Jr.
Richard Tucker Jr. was born in 1943 in Georgia. He grew up in a difficult environment. Tucker's parents struggled with alcoholism. Reports describe them as often violent and frequently in jail. His mother was shot to death in a fight over alcohol when Tucker was just a child. His father also died after a drinking binge. This unstable home life affected Tucker from a young age.
Tucker's legal troubles began early in his life. By the time he was a teenager, he had already engaged in criminal activities. He had several run-ins with the law and was arrested multiple times. In 1964, at the age of 21, he was convicted of the murder of his aunt, which led to a lengthy prison sentence. He spent about 14 years in prison for this crime.
After his release, Tucker struggled to reintegrate into society. He had a history of substance abuse, including alcohol and marijuana. Reports indicate that he found it challenging to find a stable job or lead a normal life. He was on parole when he committed another crime in 1978, which would lead to his arrest.
Tucker's early life experiences, including his troubled family background and criminal behavior, played a significant role in his later actions.
In 1964, Richard Tucker murdered his aunt by stabbing her with a knife. He was convicted and sentenced to prison for this crime. He was released on parole after serving about 14 years.
On September 19, 1978, Tucker kidnapped Edna Sandefur from a hospital parking lot in Macon, Georgia. After he forced her to drive to a secluded area, he robbed her and brutally beat her to death with an iron pipe. He then stripped her body of clothing and attempted to destroy evidence by burning it. Tucker left the scene in Edna's car. Her body was found two days later, on September 21, 1978.
Tucker was arrested shortly after the murder. During police questioning, he initially claimed that a friend, Willie Lee Mahone, was responsible for the crime. Later, he confessed that he had acted alone. His confession included details about the murder and led police to crucial evidence, including the murder weapon and Edna's belongings.
In 1980, Tucker was convicted of murder and kidnapping with bodily injury. He received two death sentences for his crimes. After exhausting various appeals, Tucker was executed by electrocution in Georgia on May 22, 1987.
