1992Richard Reynolds was born on November 8, 1968, in Brooklyn, New York. His early life took place in a bustling city known for its diversity and challenges.
Reynolds was largely influenced by the environment around him. Many neighborhoods in Brooklyn were affected by crime and drugs. This troubled environment might have pushed him toward a life of crime. As a young man, he became involved in drug dealing. He primarily dealt in crack cocaine, which was a significant problem in many urban areas during the late 1980s and early 1990s.
The combination of a rough neighborhood and personal choices led him deeper into illicit activities. Eventually, he moved to Waterbury, Connecticut.
By the early 1990s, Reynolds was living in Waterbury and continued his involvement in drug dealing. He was wanted in New York on drug charges at the time of his later arrest. His illegal activities were a defining part of his life during this period.
On December 18, 1992, in New Haven County, Connecticut, Richard Reynolds shot and killed Waterbury police officer Walter T. Williams during a routine traffic stop. Officer Williams was on patrol around 4 a.m. when he approached Reynolds and another individual. While questioning them, Officer Williams noticed something suspicious about Reynolds.
As Officer Williams prepared to search Reynolds, he bumped into him to check if he was wearing a bulletproof vest. This was a tactic Reynolds used to determine if the officer was protected. Once he confirmed the officer was not wearing a vest, Reynolds pulled out a gun and shot Officer Williams in the back of the head. The officer fell unconscious next to his police car.
After shooting Williams, Reynolds and his accomplice fled the scene. A passerby saw Officer Williams lying on the street and used his portable radio to call for help. Officer Williams was rushed to St. Mary's Hospital, where he underwent surgery but died that evening without regaining consciousness. He was 34 years old at the time of his death.
Two days later, police arrested Reynolds. He was found hiding in a home close to where the shooting occurred. During the investigation, witnesses identified him as the shooter. There were also indications that Reynolds was involved in dealing drugs and had a gun at the time of the incident.
In 1995, Richard Reynolds was sentenced to death for the murder of Officer Williams. The jury found him guilty of murder and capital felony. After his conviction, Reynolds showed little reaction and was taken into custody for his sentence.
