Bio

Richard Lee McCoy was born on January 18, 1966, in the United States. Before the murder case, he also used the name Jamil Rashid. By adulthood, McCoy was living in Florida. Investigators connected him to a deadly robbery in Jacksonville. The case later placed him on Florida’s death row. He became known for the killing of a liquor store clerk during an armed robbery in Duval County in 2000.

Murder Story

On the morning of June 13, 2000, Shervie Ann Elliot was working at an ABC Liquors store in Duval County, Florida, when a robbery took place. During the crime, she was shot multiple times in the abdomen, neck, and face. She died from her injuries. Police investigators found fingerprints on the store’s money pouch that matched Richard McCoy. Surveillance video also linked him to the robbery and killing.

Several days later, the store offered a reward for information. Zsa Zsa Marcel, the mother of McCoy’s child, contacted authorities and told them he had confessed to the crime. She later wore a police recording device and spoke with him again. During that recorded conversation, prosecutors said McCoy confirmed his involvement.

McCoy denied guilt when questioned by police and claimed he had been home with his girlfriend at the time. His defense presented witnesses who supported that alibi. A jury convicted him of first-degree murder and armed robbery on May 29, 2001. The jury recommended death by a 7–5 vote, and on August 9, 2001, the judge sentenced him to death for murder and life imprisonment for robbery.
