— Ricardo Muñoz Ramirez
Ricardo "Richard" Muñoz Ramírez was born on February 29, 1960, in El Paso, Texas. He was the youngest of five children in a Mexican American family. His father, Julian, worked for the railroad, while his mother, Mercedes, held various jobs. Richard's early life was marked by poverty and a tumultuous family environment. His father was known to have a violent temper, which caused a fearful atmosphere at home.
As a child, Richard was said to be quiet and somewhat shy. However, this changed as he grew older. He became drawn to gangs and was often influenced by his older relatives. One of these influences was his cousin Mike, a Vietnam War veteran. Mike showed Richard pictures of his time in the war, including images of violence and death, which made a lasting impression on Richard.
Richard struggled in school. He failed the ninth grade twice and was often more interested in video games than academics. He began using drugs at a young age, which further distanced him from his studies. After dropping out of school, he became involved in petty crime, committing acts of burglary, and started developing a fascination with dark themes and the occult.
By the time he was an adolescent, Richard was regularly using marijuana and later, hard drugs like cocaine and PCP. He was known for breaking into homes and stealing, often while peeping into windows. His behaviors became increasingly deviant and disturbing over time. He would often use violence to get what he wanted, showing no remorse for his actions.
Richard moved to California when he was eighteen in search of a more exciting life and to escape his past. In California, he engaged in more serious criminal activities, including theft and drug abuse. His life took a dark turn as he became more involved in Satanism and began to idolize figures of violence, including serial killers.
In June 1984, Ricardo "Richard" Muñoz Ramirez committed his first known murder when he broke into the apartment of 79-year-old Jennie Vincow in Glassell Park, California. She was found brutally murdered with her throat slashed and her body showing signs of sexual assault.
On March 17, 1985, Ramirez attacked again. He shot Maria Hernandez in the parking garage of her condo, and when she survived, he entered her home and fatally shot her roommate, Dayle Okazaki. That same night, he killed 30-year-old Tsai-Lian Yu in Monterey Park, dragging her from her car and shooting her multiple times.
Just ten days later, on March 27, Ramirez murdered Vincent and Maxine Zazzara in Whittier. He shot Vincent and brutally mutilated Maxine, carving a T-shaped wound into her chest and gouging out her eyes. This attack marked a shift in Ramirez’s crimes, as he began to show patterns that indicated sexual and ritualistic motivations.

On May 14, he shot and killed 66-year-old William Doi in Monterey Park. Just days later, on May 29, he attacked 83-year-old Mabel Bell and her disabled sister Blanche Wolfe, using a hammer to beat them. Ramirez attempted to rape Bell and left pentagrams drawn in lipstick at the crime scene.
The summer months saw an escalation in his violence. He proceeded to attack and kill three more women in July: Patty Higgins, Mary Louise Cannon, and Joyce Nelson, each found with severe injuries that illustrated Ramirez's growing brutality. He also attacked a teenage girl, Whitney Bennett, but she survived.
On July 20, he murdered 32-year-old Chitat Assawahem and assaulted his wife, Sakima, and their son. Later that day, he killed Glendale couple Max and Lela Kneiding, further establishing his terrifying reputation.
After a series of lifeless bodies, Ramirez traveled to San Francisco where he shot 66-year-old Peter Pan and injured his wife Barbara, scrawling a pentagram on the wall of their home.
On August 24, he shot 29-year-old Bill Carns in the head and raped his fiancée, Inez Erickson, demanding that she swear her love for Satan. Inez managed to provide a description of Ramirez and a key detail about the car he drove before he left.
Ramirez was arrested on August 31, 1985, after being recognized by residents of East Los Angeles when they saw him trying to steal a car. They realized he matched the description of the Night Stalker and detained him until police arrived.
After his arrest, Ramirez faced numerous charges, including 13 counts of murder, as well as sexual assault, robbery, and burglary. His trial began in 1988 and drew intense media focus due to the horrific nature of his crimes and the fear he instilled in the community.

The trial lasted for several years, marred by numerous delays and incidents, including the murder of a juror. Ultimately, on September 20, 1989, Ramirez was found guilty on multiple counts of murder and was sentenced to death.
He spent years on death row, constantly appealing his conviction. Richard Ramirez died in prison from complications of liver failure on June 7, 2013.
