May 11, 2006Gerald John Robinson was born on April 14, 1938, in Toledo, Ohio. He grew up in a Roman Catholic family and was well-known in his community for his strong faith. After finishing high school, he pursued a career in the clergy. He was ordained as a Roman Catholic priest in 1964 at the Toledo Rosary Cathedral.
Following his ordination, Robinson served in various parishes. He worked at Christ the King and St. Adalbert in Toledo, and St. Michael in Findlay. His work as a priest included roles as a chaplain at hospitals, where he ministered to patients and families. Robinson was particularly notable for delivering sermons and hearing confessions in Polish, which made him popular in Toledo's Polish neighborhoods.
In the 1970s, Robinson took on the role of chaplain at Mercy Hospital in Toledo. He was involved in the pastoral care of the sick and terminally ill. Part of his duties involved collaborating with the hospital’s staff and other clergy members, including Sister Margaret Ann Pahl, who served as the caretaker of the hospital chapel.
Throughout his career, Robinson had a seemingly stable presence in the community, earning respect among parishioners. However, there were hints of personal issues, some suggested that he had conflicts with individuals around him, including Sister Pahl. Robinson's life took a drastic turn years later when he became embroiled in a serious criminal investigation. The investigation focused on events that occurred in 1980, long after he had established himself as a respected member of the clergy.
On April 5, 1980, Sister Margaret Ann Pahl, a 71-year-old Catholic nun, was found dead in the sacristy of a chapel at Mercy Hospital in Toledo, Ohio. She had been stabbed 31 times with a sword-shaped letter opener, which belonged to Reverend Gerald John Robinson, the hospital's chaplain. The stabbing wounds included nine that formed the shape of an inverted cross. Investigators believe this was done to humiliate Sister Pahl in death. She was also strangled before being covered with an altar cloth.

For years, the case remained unsolved. Reverend Robinson was questioned shortly after the murder but was not charged. In 2003, a letter led to the reopening of the investigation, which included allegations of sexual abuse against Robinson. On April 23, 2004, he was arrested for the murder of Sister Margaret Ann.
The trial started on April 24, 2006, and prosecutors presented various forensic evidence linking Robinson to the crime. Witnesses testified about the sword-shaped letter opener and blood patterns found on the altar cloth. After a six-hour deliberation, the jury convicted him of murder on May 11, 2006. he was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison. Robinson maintained his innocence throughout the trial and continues to appeal his conviction.
Rev. Gerald John Robinson died at age 76 on July 4, 2014, while in prison under the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction.
