Raymont Hopewell was born on June 11, 1971, in Baltimore, Maryland. He grew up in a neighborhood near Gwynns Falls/Leakin Park. As a child, he was described as a typical kid who enjoyed playing outside. He often rode bikes and played games like hide and seek with his friends. He had a large group of friends during his early years.
As Raymont got older, not much is known about his family life or education. In his sophomore year of high school, he made the decision to drop out. After leaving school, he began to have problems with drugs. He started using heroin and became addicted to it.
murder story
On February 21, 1999, Raymont Hopewell killed 60-year-old Constance Wills. He broke into her home and attacked her in her bedroom. He tied her wrists together, sexually assaulted her, beat her, and then strangled her to death. Afterward, he took valuables from her home. Her body was found the next day by her daughter.
Hopewell was arrested in 2001 after trying to sell cocaine to an undercover officer. He was released on bail but was convicted of the drug charge in September 2002 and given two years of probation. In November 2002, he entered the Greenwell Apartments where his mother lived. He broke into 88-year-old Sarah Shannon's apartment and, after finding her in bed, raped and strangled her. Her body was found later by a relative.
In 2004, Hopewell was arrested for violating his probation and sentenced to 18 months in prison. While in a halfway house in September 2004, he failed to return from a work release and was reported as a walk off.
On May 31, 2005, he broke into the apartment of 78-year-old Sadie Mack. He tied her hands with a shoestring, sexually assaulted her, and then strangled her. Her body was discovered by her son later that day. On August 21, he entered the apartment of 82-year-old Carlton Crawford. He tied Crawford, who was deaf, and beat him until he died.
On August 31, Hopewell knocked on 78-year-old Lydia R. Wingfield's door, claiming to know her son. Later that afternoon, he broke in, tied her up, raped her, and strangled her to death. On September 2, he broke into another home but did not kill the 63-year-old resident after assaulting her.
On September 9, he attacked an elderly couple in their home. After demanding money, he fled when the woman claimed to have already called the police. The next day, he confronted 80-year-old Thomas Tabron and his 76-year-old wife, Amelia. He threatened to kill them. After a struggle, he took some money and left.
Hopewell was arrested on September 20, 2005, in connection with Crawford's murder. DNA evidence linked him to other crimes. In December 2005, he was charged with five counts of murder. In September 2006, he accepted a plea deal to avoid the death penalty and was sentenced to four consecutive life sentences without parole. He apologized to the families of his victims at his sentencing. He is currently imprisoned at the Western Correctional Institution in Maryland.
