1992Raymond Wahia Ratima was born in 1967 in New Zealand. He grew up in a challenging environment. As an adult, he faced many struggles, particularly with relationships and finances.
In early 1992, Raymond and his wife, Toni, encountered financial hardships. Unable to afford their rent, they moved into Toni's parent's home in Judds Street, Masterton. They had three young sons together, which added to the stress of their situation. During this time, their marriage became strained. This conflict was a significant factor in the difficulties they faced.
In June 1992, a serious argument with his wife and family led to Raymond being forced out of the home. This event made him feel lost and desperate. He sought help from social services and lawyers to find a new place to live but felt overwhelmed and hopeless after days without proper sleep or food. His mental state began to deteriorate during this time.
On June 26, 1992, Toni left to meet her parents at a local pub, leaving their three sons at home with her sister, Nicola. Several other family members were also present in the house that night. During this time, Raymond returned home, setting the stage for tragic events that would follow.
Raymond Ratima’s early life was marked by struggles that ultimately contributed to the tragic events in June 1992.
On June 26, 1992, Raymond Wahia Ratima committed a horrific crime in Masterton, New Zealand. He killed seven of his family members with a weapon. The victims included his three children, aged 2, 4, and 6, along with his sister-in-law, brother-in-law, and their young son.
Raymond entered the house at around 9:25 PM while the other adults were visiting a local pub. He attacked all seven family members with force, leaving them dead in different rooms of the house. His three children were found in their mother's bedroom.
After the attacks, Raymond hid and waited for his wife and other family members to return home. When his father-in-law came back first, he was attacked as well. Meanwhile, Toni, Raymond's wife, managed to escape and called for help. Police arrived shortly after the call and found the scene of the crime.
Raymond was arrested that same night. He later faced trial for his actions. He expressed remorse during the court proceedings but was still given a life sentence in August 1992 for his crimes. In total, he was charged with seven counts of murder, in addition to charges related to an unborn child due to the death of his sister-in-law, who was pregnant at the time.
Raymond Wahia Ratima is currently serving his sentence and has been denied parole multiple times since becoming eligible in 2002.
