murder story

On September 11, 1995, Raymond Eugene Johnson was involved in an argument with Clarence Ray Oliver in Oklahoma City. During the confrontation, Johnson pulled out a gun and threatened Oliver. As Oliver tried to drive away, Johnson shot him through the passenger side window. Oliver's car crashed into a nearby ditch and was found the next day. Johnson was arrested two weeks later and pleaded guilty to manslaughter. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

After being paroled in 2005, Johnson moved to Tulsa and began a relationship with Brooke Whitaker, who was a mother of four. Their relationship became abusive. Whitaker filed a restraining order against Johnson in April 2007, but it was dropped when neither party went to a scheduled hearing. On June 23, 2007, Johnson attacked Whitaker in her home, beating her with a hammer. He then set her on fire with gasoline. Whitaker suffered severe injuries and her infant daughter, Kya, died in the fire. Whitaker was taken to the hospital but later succumbed to her burns.

Johnson was arrested later that day and charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of arson. He admitted to the crimes during the arrest. His trial began in June 2009, and the prosecutors sought the death penalty. Johnson was found guilty on all charges and sentenced to death for the murders and to life imprisonment for arson. Since then, all of his appeals have been denied, and he remains on death row. In July 2022, he was scheduled for execution on May 2, 2024, but this has been postponed. Johnson is currently awaiting a new execution date.
