Bio

Ralph L. Lynch was born on October 5, 1949. Before Mary Jennifer Love’s murder, Lynch lived in Colerain Township, Hamilton County, Ohio. He was known to police before the killing. During the investigation, an officer recognized him and told investigators that Lynch had previously been arrested for exposing himself to a child.

At trial, the defense presented background evidence about Lynch’s childhood and mental functioning. Reports from the case stated that his defense argued he had suffered childhood sexual abuse. Court summaries also noted that Lynch had a reported IQ of 72, which became part of later legal arguments during his appeals.

Despite those claims, the jury rejected the defense argument that his background outweighed the aggravating factors in the murder of a young child. Lynch was sentenced to death in 1999.

Murder Story

On June 24, 1998, Ralph Lynch lured Mary Jennifer Love into his apartment in Colerain Township, Ohio. He invited her inside and then began sexually assaulting her. When she screamed, Lynch placed his hands around her neck and strangled her for several minutes.

After Mary died, Lynch took her body to the bathtub and sexually abused her body. He then placed her remains inside a vacuum-cleaner box, carried the box out of his apartment, and dumped it in a wooded lot off Breezy Acres. He covered the body with an old rug and disposed of her clothing at his workplace.

Mary’s parents reported her missing, and police began searching the area. FBI agents canvassed the neighborhood and interviewed Lynch. He admitted that he knew Mary and had spoken with her, but he denied knowing where she was.

Investigators later questioned him again. During one interview, police learned about his prior arrest for exposing himself to a child. Lynch was advised of his Miranda rights and signed a waiver. He admitted past sexual contact with young girls and admitted touching Mary outside his apartment, but he was allowed to leave after that interview.

On July 3, 1998, police asked Lynch to return for more questioning. After several hours of interrogation, he admitted that Mary was on Breezy Acres and led police to her body. He then confessed that he had killed her. A recording of his confession was later played for the jury.

Lynch was indicted on three counts of aggravated murder, along with rape, kidnapping, and gross abuse of a corpse. Each aggravated-murder count carried death-penalty specifications, including that the murder occurred during rape and kidnapping and that the victim was under 13 years old.

A jury convicted Lynch and recommended death. On October 19, 1999, the trial court sentenced him to death. He also received life imprisonment for rape, 10 years for kidnapping, and 12 months for gross abuse of a corpse, with the sentences ordered to run consecutively.

The Ohio Supreme Court unanimously upheld his convictions and death sentence on May 14, 2003, rejecting his legal challenges. He died in custody on August 8, 2022, and was never executed.
