Bio

Peter James Knight was born on January 1, 1954, in New South Wales, Australia. He was one of six children and was raised in a Catholic family. He left school around the age of 16 and later lived in different parts of Australia, including Queensland and New South Wales. For many years before the murder, he lived as a recluse in a makeshift bush camp, away from ordinary society, without electricity or a telephone.

Knight held extreme personal beliefs, especially against abortion. He also held strong views against smoking, tobacco companies, and the taking of oaths. In 2000, while visiting Melbourne, he saw listings for pregnancy termination services in a phone directory and became focused on a personal campaign against abortion providers. He attended anti-abortion protests and tried to promote campaigns against abortion clinic advertising, but these efforts did not produce the result he wanted.

By 2001, Knight had become deeply obsessed with his anti-abortion beliefs. He returned to his camp and began preparing for an attack. He stole a rifle and ammunition from a store in Parkes, New South Wales, then traveled to Melbourne by bicycle. He set up a campsite in Templestowe and began watching the East Melbourne Fertility Control Clinic. He later prepared items for what the sentencing judge described as a planned massacre.

Murder Story

On July 16, 2001, Peter James Knight entered the Fertility Control Clinic at 116 Wellington Parade in East Melbourne. He carried a rifle hidden in a specially made bag. He also had other items, including kerosene, lighters, torches, handmade gags, door-blocking devices, and handwritten notices. One note said appointments were canceled because of a “fatal accident” involving staff.

At the time of the attack, there were 15 staff members and 26 patients or companions inside the clinic. Knight’s plan was not only to kill one person, but to carry out a wider massacre. The sentencing judge later said Knight had entered the clinic with a plan to kill many people and that the murder of Steven Rogers happened in that wider context.

Steven Rogers, a 44-year-old security guard, approached Knight in the clinic reception area. Knight told Rogers that he had a gun and that he was serious. He then raised the rifle and shot Rogers once in the chest. Rogers died from the gunshot wound.

After shooting Rogers, Knight pointed the rifle at a pregnant woman in the reception area. A man named Sandro De Maria grabbed the gun and struggled with him. Other people in the clinic joined in and helped overpower Knight before he could carry out the rest of his plan. Staff and clients held him until police arrived.

After his arrest, Knight refused to cooperate with police and did not answer many questions. Police were unable to confirm his identity for several weeks, even after publishing his photograph. He later chose to represent himself in court. A jury found him guilty of murder in April 2002.

On November 19, 2002, Justice Bernard Teague sentenced Knight to life imprisonment with a minimum non-parole period of 23 years. The judge noted that Knight had murdered one man while planning a massacre of many and that he remained a serious danger to the community.

Knight later tried to appeal, but in March 2004 the Victorian Court of Appeal rejected his request for extra time to lodge the appeal. He remained imprisoned under his life sentence.
