Pete Russell Jr. was born on May 2, 1973, in Harris County, Texas. He had a prior prison record for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and aggravated robbery. This conviction resulted in an eight-year sentence, from which he was discharged in 1999. Despite this, he struggled to find stability after his release.

Murder Story

On August 13, 2001, Pete Russell Jr. fatally stabbed Tanjala Brewer, a 40-year-old woman. Russell believed that Brewer had informed the police of his drug activities, leading to his recent arrest. They had previously been in a relationship, and Brewer had introduced Russell to a narcotics officer earlier that year.

Russell had just pleaded guilty to a charge of delivering a controlled substance and was to begin a ten-year sentence. He committed the murder while out on bail, preparing for his upcoming incarceration. After the murder, Russell attempted to take his own life. When police found him, he was in a bathtub at a motel, holding rat poison.

Brewer was discovered dead in her home later that morning. Investigators found gas valves turned on and candles burning, which suggested an intention to cause further harm. Evidence and witness accounts led police to Russell as a prime suspect. At the hospital, after his suicide attempt, Russell confessed to killing Brewer, claiming that she had betrayed him.

On February 26, 2003, he was convicted of capital murder and sentenced to death.
