Murder Story

On October 24, 1988, Perry Alexander Taylor shot Geraldine Birch in Hillsborough County, Florida. After the murder, he was arrested three days later. Taylor admitted to killing Birch during an encounter that occurred after she joined a group of friends he was with. Birch had expressed the need to get to Sulphur Springs, and they agreed on a sexual act in exchange for money or drugs.

Witnesses saw Taylor and Birch speaking before they went to a Little League field dugout. Taylor claimed they engaged in sex, but he stated that it ended when Birch began performing oral sex on him. He alleged that Birch bit him, causing him to choke and hit her in anger. The medical examination of Birch revealed significant injuries, including damage to her internal organs. She also had bruises and a bite mark on her arm.

On November 16, 1988, Taylor was indicted for first-degree murder and sexual battery with a deadly weapon. He was found guilty on May 11, 1989, and sentenced to death on May 12, 1989. The jury recommended the death penalty unanimously.

Later, in 1991, the Florida Supreme Court affirmed his conviction but overturned the death sentence, sending the case back for resentencing. When resentencing occurred in 1992, an advisory jury voted in favor of the death penalty. Taylor received the death sentence again on June 23, 1992.

Taylor pursued appeals in the Florida Supreme Court. His first appeal was focused on several claims regarding jury selection and the conduct of the prosecutor. Despite these appeals, he remained on death row, with his legal case continuing for several years.
