— Paul Michael McManus
Paul Michael McManus was born on July 14, 1972, in the United States. As an adult, McManus married Melissa McManus, and the couple had two daughters, Lindsey and Shelby. Their youngest child, Shelby, was born with severe medical complications, which placed additional strain on the family. Over time, the marriage deteriorated, and the couple became estranged. Melissa McManus retained custody of the children, and legal proceedings for divorce were underway.
In the period leading up to the murders, McManus experienced personal and emotional difficulties. Evidence later presented in court indicated that he had expressed distress and made statements suggesting future violent actions. He reportedly left his job shortly before the incident and told acquaintances to watch for news coverage, indicating an awareness that he intended to commit a significant act.
On February 26, 2001, McManus was served with divorce papers while at his mother’s residence. This event occurred on the same day as the murders and preceded his actions later that day.
On February 26, 2001, Paul Michael McManus carried out the fatal shootings of his estranged wife and their two daughters at the family residence located in Vanderburgh County, Indiana.
Earlier that day, McManus obtained a .38 caliber revolver and ammunition. He then traveled by taxi to the home where his wife, Melissa McManus, lived with their children. Upon arrival, he entered the residence and confronted Melissa.
During the encounter, McManus shot Melissa McManus once in the leg and then multiple times in the head, resulting in her death. He then proceeded to kill their eight-year-old daughter, Lindsey McManus, shooting her multiple times in the head. The youngest child, Shelby McManus, aged 23 months, was also shot and killed.
Following the killings, McManus left the residence and drove to the bridge spanning the Ohio River between Evansville, Indiana, and Henderson, Kentucky. He climbed to a high point on the structure, estimated to be equivalent to several stories in height. Law enforcement officers attempted to persuade him to come down, but he ultimately jumped into the river below.
Despite the fall, McManus survived with relatively minor injuries. He was rescued from the water, taken into custody, and transported to a hospital for treatment. He was formally arrested the same day.
McManus was charged with three counts of murder. During the trial, the defense did not dispute that he committed the shootings but argued that he was legally insane at the time of the offense. Expert testimony was presented from both prosecution and defense witnesses regarding his mental state. Court-appointed psychiatrists testified that McManus was able to understand the nature and wrongfulness of his actions, while a defense expert argued that he had experienced a loss of contact with reality.
Additional evidence introduced at trial included prior statements made by McManus indicating an intention to harm his family, as well as actions taken on the day of the murders to acquire a weapon and ammunition.
On May 9, 2002, a jury found McManus guilty on all three counts of murder, rejecting the insanity defense. During the penalty phase, the jury considered aggravating factors, including the number of victims and the age of the children.
On June 5, 2002, the court sentenced Paul Michael McManus to death by lethal injection. The conviction and sentence were later upheld on appeal by the Indiana Supreme Court in 2004.
