June 4, 2013Patrick Odoch Okot was born in Uganda. Patrick had some encounters with law enforcement. He was arrested for consuming bhang, which is a form of cannabis. Over time, Patrick enlisted in the Uganda People's Defense Force (UPDF), where he served as a private in the military.
While in the army, Patrick was stationed at Bombo Barracks. This barracks was known for its strict military discipline. However, it was also a place where tensions could rise, especially among soldiers dealing with various personal and professional challenges. Patrick's life began to take a dramatic turn leading up to the events that eventually unfolded in March 2013.
Patrick's life changed when he became involved with a case that highlighted serious issues around consent and sexual misconduct. Just a few days before the tragic events, he attempted to assault a 14-year-old girl, the daughter of a fellow soldier. When the girl's parents reported the incident to the police, it led to significant consequences for Patrick. His actions and the subsequent reporting by the girl's parents created a situation of animosity.
Despite being a soldier tasked with protecting others, Patrick’s life took a dark path from there. The military environment, along with personal conflicts, shaped his mindset and actions. This set the stage for the severe events that followed in March 2013.
On March 9, 2013, Patrick Odoch Okot entered a bar in Bombo, Uganda, armed with an AK-47 assault rifle. At around 12:12 a.m., he opened fire on the patrons inside. His victims included ten people, such as Sgt. Onesmus Odule and his wife Florence, who had recently reported an attempted rape incident involving their daughter.
Okot shot indiscriminately, killing nine of the victims at the bar. David Komakech, another victim, died shortly after from his injuries. In addition to the ten fatalities, two others were wounded during the attack. After the shooting, Okot fled the scene.
In his escape, he traveled to a nearby area where he killed another individual and stole personal belongings from a woman he encountered. Law enforcement recovered multiple spent rounds from the crime scene, indicating the violence of the attack.
A manhunt for Okot began immediately after the shooting. Security forces tightened their presence in the area and conducted searches, leading to the discovery of his army uniform and the weapon used in the murders. On March 19, he was located and arrested in Oyam District, ten days after the shooting.
After his arrest, he was charged with multiple offenses, including ten counts of murder, multiple counts of attempted murder, and robbery. Okot was held in a military prison as he awaited trial.
On June 4, 2013, Okot was convicted and sentenced to 90 years in prison for his crimes. His sentence included specific terms for each charge, but they will be served concurrently.
