— Ozan Selamet
Ozan Selamet was born in 1952. He was originally from Turkey. As a young man, he moved to Belgium. There is not much known about his early life or his family background. As he grew up, he became a worker. He settled in Belgium and lived there for many years.
Ozan eventually got married and had children. He had five kids in total. His family consisted of three sons and two daughters. Ozan's relationship with his wife went through difficulties over time. This led to their separation, and Ozan became estranged from her.
Reports suggest that Ozan had problems interacting with his children. Some neighbors described Ozan as a strict father. They believed that the children were often scared of him.
Ozan's life in Belgium took a dark turn when his conflicts with his family grew. On January 19, 2002, his actions would change everything, but that part of his story involves events that led to his arrest later that day. At that moment, he had no idea of the headlines that would follow.
On January 19, 2002, Ozan Selamet committed a series of killings in Brussels, Belgium. He murdered his five children and his ex-wife's new lover. The victims were his children: Kismet, 4; Abdul-Kerim, 6; Yildirim, 9; Ilknur, 16; and Yavuz Selim, 18. The other victim was Mustapha Arbay, 38, who was his ex-wife's partner.
After the killings, Ozan drove the victims to his ex-wife's home in Ganshoren, a working-class neighborhood. He first killed three of his sons and a daughter when they came to visit him. He then shot his eldest daughter and killed Mustapha at the home.
The bodies of the three boys were found in a car parked near their mother’s house. The oldest son was discovered shot, while the younger two had been strangled. The youngest daughter, who managed to escape but was found a few meters from the car, died on the way to the hospital.
After committing these acts, Ozan went to a nearby cafe. There, he drank some alcohol and confessed to the cafe manager about the murders. He surrendered to the police and handed over his weapon.
Ozan Selamet was arrested early the next morning and later sentenced to life in prison on October 24, 2003.
