Bio

Ottis Elwood Toole was born on March 5, 1947, in Jacksonville, Florida. He had an unstable early life. His mother was very religious and Toole claimed that she abused him. She often dressed him in girl’s clothing and called him "Becky." Toole's childhood was marked by trauma as he faced incest from relatives, including his older sister and a neighbor. His maternal grandmother was said to be a satanist, which further complicated Toole's early experiences as she introduced him to various satanic practices.

From a young age, Toole showed signs of developmental challenges and was often designated as having mild mental retardation, with an I.Q. of 75. However, it is believed that his true intelligence might have been higher, as learning disabilities like dyslexia and ADHD affected his education. Toole also struggled with epilepsy, which led to frequent seizures. Throughout his childhood, he frequently ran away from home and often slept in abandoned houses. He developed a fascination with fire and was known as a serial arsonist, feeling a sexual arousal from flames.

At the age of five, Toole claimed he was forced to have sex with a friend of his father. He realized he was homosexual by the time he was eight and had his first sexual relationship with a neighbor boy by age 12. He dropped out of school in the ninth grade and began visiting gay bars. In his teenage years, Toole described himself as a male prostitute and was known to dress in drag. He claimed to have committed his first murder at 14 when he ran over a traveling salesman with his own car after the salesman propositioned him.

Toole's first arrest occurred at the age of 17 in August 1964 for loitering. The details of his life between 1966 and 1973 are less clear, but it is believed that he drifted across the Southwestern United States, supporting himself through prostitution and panhandling. During this time, he became a prime suspect in the murder of Patricia Webb in Nebraska in 1974 and Ellen Holman in Colorado shortly after that.

In early 1975, Toole returned to Jacksonville after hitchhiking across the American South. On January 14, 1976, he married a woman who was 25 years older than him, but she left him just three days later upon discovering his sexuality. In 1976, Toole met Henry Lee Lucas in a Jacksonville soup kitchen. They developed a sexual relationship and soon began committing crimes together.

Murder Story

Ottis Elwood Toole was known for his violent and horrific crimes committed between 1961 and 1983. His victims included men, women, and children, and his methods of murder involved stabbing, shooting, and fire. He was responsible for a minimum of six known murders, but he himself claimed to have killed many more—estimates range significantly, with some saying up to 65 victims.

In April 1983, Toole was arrested on an arson charge in Jacksonville, Florida. While in custody, he confessed to the murder of Adam Walsh, a six-year-old boy who disappeared in 1981. However, shortly after his confession, police cleared him as a suspect again. Over the years, he also confessed to other murders, sometimes providing specific details that only the killer would know. However, his confessions were often inconsistent, and he would recant some of them later.

On January 12, 1982, Toole murdered George Sonnenberg by locking him inside his home and setting it on fire. He was convicted and sentenced to death for this murder in 1984, and he also received a death sentence for another murder, that of Ada Johnson, in February 1983. Both sentences were later commuted to life imprisonment.

Toole was known to have a sexual relationship with fellow serial killer Henry Lee Lucas, and he often claimed to have participated in many of Lucas's murders. Toole's confessions, though sometimes shocking, were filled with contradictions, making it difficult to ascertain the true extent of his crimes.

In prison, Toole eventually pled guilty to four more murders in 1991, receiving additional life sentences. He continued to be a topic of discussion for his role in the large number of murders that occurred during his time with Lucas and the many claims he made about cannibalism and satanic rituals.

Toole died in prison from liver failure on September 15, 1996. His violent and twisted legacy continued to prompt investigations, particularly into the case of Adam Walsh, which remained contentious even after his death, given the lack of solid evidence to support his confession.
