murder story
On November 20, 2016, Detective Benjamin Marconi was shot in front of the San Antonio Police Department headquarters. Marconi was sitting in his patrol car, writing a traffic ticket. At that moment, another motorist pulled up, exited his vehicle, and approached Marconi's side window. He shot Marconi in the head and then reached inside the car to shoot him again. Afterward, the shooter fled the scene in his car.
Det. Marconi, who had served for 20 years, was rushed to the San Antonio Military Medical Center but died later that day. The shooting marked a troubling increase in attacks on police officers, with investigators believing that the shooter was targeting law enforcement in general.
The next day, Otis Tyrone McKane was identified as the shooter. He was arrested after a manhunt while riding in a car belonging to his wife. McKane had visited the police headquarters just hours before the shooting and had a criminal record that included charges related to domestic violence.
McKane was charged with capital murder and held on a $2,000,000 bond. During his arrest, he expressed frustration with the court system regarding visitation rights to his son and offered an apology to Marconi's family.
His trial was initially set for early 2019 but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It finally began in July 2021. On July 28, 2021, he was found guilty of Marconi's murder. After the verdict, McKane reacted by attempting to attack a bailiff and was subsequently tackled by deputies in the courtroom.
On August 7, 2021, he was sentenced to death. The incident prompted widespread reaction, with officials, including the Texas Governor, condemning the attack on law enforcement. The killing highlighted a concerning national trend of violence against police officers, leading to discussions about stronger protections for law enforcement.
