Bio

Orlando Magaña Dorantes was born in 1977 in Iztapalapa, a borough in Mexico City. He was the oldest of three siblings, with two younger sisters named Brenda and Gina. The Magaña family moved to a different neighborhood in Tlalpan in the early 1990s. Orlando's childhood was marked by struggles in school. At the age of seven, he failed second grade and ended his elementary education with low grades. Because of this, he was enrolled in a military school, which influenced his desire to be on the side of "good," aspiring to become a federal judicial officer like his father Jorge and his uncles Pedro and Gerardo.

Orlando trained in taekwondo for twelve years but was not particularly distinguished in academics. He often missed school, whether it was middle school or high school. Despite his lack of focus on education, he was heavily influenced by his family, who had a history in law enforcement. This upbringing created a mix of aspirations and criminal activities in his life.

Growing up, Orlando spent time with some local youths who were involved in various criminal activities. Even after moving to Tlalpan, he continued seeing friends from Iztapalapa who were connected to low-level extortion. These connections laid the groundwork for his later criminal behavior.

Orlando's friend Omar Olivos encouraged him to enroll in the Technological University (Unitec) to pursue a more productive life. He enrolled in 1999 but never attended classes and essentially dropped out after only paying the registration fee. Omar was studying law and was making strides in his career, which created feelings of jealousy in Orlando. He often picked up his girlfriend Diana, a dedicated student, and had a fascination with weapons, feeling the need to carry a firearm for protection.

Murder Story

On November 15, 2002, Orlando Magaña Dorantes and his accomplice, Jorge Esteva or Esteban, entered the home of the Narezo Loyola family in Tlalpan, Mexico City, with the intention to rob. They believed only the house staff would be present. However, when the family arrived home, everything changed.

The intruders tied up the mother, Diana; the daughters, Andrea and Diana; and the two domestic workers, Margarita and Cecilia. When the eldest son, Ricardo, returned home, he recognized Orlando and confronted him. This led to a struggle, and Orlando, along with Esteva, subdued the entire family. They waited for the daughter Andrea to return from a friend’s house to avoid having additional witnesses.

In a horrifying turn of events, Orlando and Esteva executed the family one by one, using a bladed weapon and a firearm. After committing the murders, they stole a vehicle, cash, and credit cards before escaping.

The police began their investigation, and Juan Pablo Quintana, a friend of Ricardo, who survived the attack, provided crucial information. He recognized Orlando as one of the assailants. This led to Orlando's arrest on December 1, 2002. The evidence against him included DNA that linked him to the scene and testimonies from the survivor.

On November 25, 2003, Orlando was sentenced to 384 years in prison for the seven homicides. He was incarcerated in the eastern preventive prison of Mexico City. Due to his high criminal profile, he was later transferred to a maximum-security prison. The investigation into his accomplice, Esteva, remains inconclusive, with conflicting reports regarding his fate.
