Bio

Norman H. Timberlake was born on August 14, 1947. He grew up in a typical American household. Specific details about his early family life and childhood are not widely documented, but he was raised in New Albany, Indiana. As a young man, Timberlake did not have a stable lifestyle, which would later reflect on his choices as an adult.

In the early 1990s, Timberlake became involved in activities that led to legal troubles. He had a friend with whom he spent time, and together they began making poor choices. In early February 1993, Timberlake and his friend drove to Indianapolis. During that trip, Timberlake took a gun from his friend's coat pocket without permission. This decision marked a significant turn in his life.

On February 4, 1993, Timberlake and his friend met another man named Tommy McElroy in a bar. They spent time together drinking and then traveled to another city in Indiana. On February 5, 1993, Timberlake and McElroy decided to drive back to Indianapolis. During this drive, they pulled over for a break, unaware of the significant events that were about to unfold.

Timberlake's actions during this period led to his involvement in a tragic incident. His choices during a confrontation with law enforcement would change the course of his life forever. Timberlake was arrested the same day he was involved in the incident. Eventually, he faced serious legal consequences, which included a death sentence.

Murder Story

On February 5, 1993, Norman H. Timberlake was involved in a serious incident. Timberlake and Tommy McElroy had been together throughout the day. Around 1:30 PM, they stopped their car on the side of Interstate 65 so McElroy could use the restroom. Indiana State Police Master Trooper Michael Greene noticed their vehicle and decided to check on them.

Michael Greene, 43, Indiana State Police Master Trooper, who was fatally shot in the line of duty on February 5, 1993.

Trooper Greene parked behind their car and approached them. He asked for their driver’s licenses and had McElroy sit in his police car while he ran a check. Timberlake stood nearby, leaning against the car. Trooper Greene discovered that McElroy had an outstanding warrant for his arrest. As he began to secure McElroy in handcuffs, Timberlake suddenly approached and shot Trooper Greene in the chest with a .25 caliber handgun.

Witnesses nearby saw the officer trying to handcuff McElroy while Timberlake lunged toward the officer. After the shooting, Timberlake and McElroy fled the scene in their vehicle. They drove to a grocery store where McElroy, still handcuffed, was arrested shortly after entering. Timberlake ran away from the car.

That same afternoon, Timberlake made a collect call from a pay phone, trying to get a ride. The operator recognized his name from the news about the shooting and alerted the police. Officers arrived at the pay phone and apprehended Timberlake. They found the .25 caliber handgun in his pocket, later confirmed as the murder weapon.

Timberlake was arrested and faced trial for his actions. He was convicted of murder and sentenced to death on August 11, 1995, for the killing of Trooper Greene.
