On June 29, 2012, after consuming alcohol at a bar in Spring, Texas, Nicole Baukus drove her vehicle onto Interstate 45 in the wrong direction. Her vehicle collided head-on with a Chevrolet Aveo, resulting in the deaths of Nicole Adams, 19, and Travis Saunders, 18. A third passenger, David Porras, sustained serious injuries.
Baukus was arrested at the scene and later charged with two counts of intoxication manslaughter and one count of intoxication assault. She initially pleaded not guilty but changed her plea to guilty during the trial. On August 2, 2013, she was sentenced to 38 years in prison: 15 years for each count of intoxication manslaughter and 8 years for intoxication assault, to be served consecutively.
Following her conviction, Baukus sought a new trial, alleging ineffective assistance of counsel and other issues. Her appeals were denied, and she remains incarcerated.
