1982Paul Wayne Luckman was born on November 1, 1964. By 1982, Luckman was 17 years old and serving as an Australian Army private at Enoggera Barracks in Brisbane, Queensland. There, Luckman became closely associated with Robin Reid, an older army corporal. Reid and Luckman shared an interest in weapons and violent fantasies, and the relationship became central to the events that led to Peter Aston’s murder.
Before the killing, Reid and Luckman had already been involved in the abduction of another boy, which the sentencing judge later considered when deciding punishment. The judge rejected Luckman’s claim that she had not been a willing participant and found that the crimes had been discussed and planned beforehand.
In 1990, while imprisoned, Luckman changed her name by deed poll to Nicole Louise Pearce and began gender transition. Pearce was later released on parole in October 1999.
On May 4, 1982, 13-year-old friends Peter Aston and Terry Ryan were hitchhiking near Beenleigh, between Brisbane and the Gold Coast. They were picked up by Robin Reid and Paul Wayne Luckman, who were both Australian Army personnel from Enoggera Barracks.
The boys were driven south, then threatened with weapons. Reid and Luckman crossed the Queensland-New South Wales border and took the boys to an isolated beach area near Kingscliff, on the New South Wales North Coast. There, both boys were restrained and assaulted.
Peter Aston was subjected to prolonged violence and sexual assault. Terry Ryan was also threatened, assaulted, and forced under fear to take part in parts of the attack against his friend. The court later found that both Reid and Luckman were active participants in the crime and that Luckman’s role was greater than she admitted.
Peter was eventually buried alive in a shallow grave. Medical evidence later showed sand in his airways, confirming that he was still alive when he was covered. Terry Ryan survived because he persuaded the attackers to spare him. Reid and Luckman then drove him back near his home.
After Terry returned home, he told his mother what had happened. She took him to police, and the investigation quickly focused on Reid and Luckman. They tried to escape in a stolen vehicle from the Enoggera army base, but they were arrested soon afterward.
Police searched the room shared by Reid and Luckman and found weapons, writings, and other material connected to violent and sexual fantasies. The case drew intense public attention because of the victim’s age, the cruelty of the attack, and the fact that both offenders were soldiers.
The committal hearing was held at Tweed Heads Court on August 4, 1982, and the case was later transferred to the Sydney Supreme Court. At trial, Reid pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, while Luckman pleaded not guilty. Both tried to shift blame onto the other.
The court rejected those defenses. Reid and Luckman were both convicted of Peter Aston’s murder. In December 1982, Justice Roden sentenced both to life imprisonment. He described the crime as extremely brutal and said that giving Luckman anything less than life imprisonment would be an abuse of the court’s power.
Luckman later legally became Nicole Louise Pearce while in prison. Pearce’s non-parole period eventually expired, and she was released on parole in October 1999. The full sentence expired in May 2006, according to later reporting.
