murder story
On March 17, 2007, Rebecca Klein's body was found in the trunk of her 1966 Ford Mustang. She had been reported missing by her partner, Nicole Abusharif. Klein was discovered bound with duct tape, gagged with a bandana, blindfolded, and suffocated with a plastic bag over her head. Police believed that Abusharif killed Klein on March 15, 2007, two days before the body was found.
After the murder, Abusharif was said to have gone out on a date with a 19-year-old woman named Rose Sodaro, whom she met online. They spent time together, went bowling, and returned to Abusharif's home. Sodaro thought Klein was just Abusharif's roommate. Investigators found that Abusharif may have had a financial motive for the murder, with a potential insurance payout of $400,000 at stake.
Forensic evidence linked Abusharif to the crime. Her fingerprints were found on the duct tape and plastic bag, and her DNA was identified on the bandana. During the investigation, it was discovered that Abusharif had told various lies, including false claims about her past and health issues.
Her coworker, Robert L. Edwards, was also charged with obstructing justice for allegedly providing false information during the investigation. He was present in the home on the day Klein was reported missing.
Abusharif was arrested and initially held on a $3 million bond, which was later reduced. After being released on bail, she violated her home confinement rules but was allowed back out on bail before her trial began.
The trial began in April 2009. Witnesses, including Sodaro and Klein's family members, testified against Abusharif. She took the stand in her defense and admitted to lying during the investigation. The defense argued that she could not have physically overpowered Klein due to her back issues and Klein's size.
On May 5, 2009, after 13 hours of deliberation, the jury convicted Abusharif of first-degree murder. She was sentenced to 50 years in prison. Her conviction was later upheld by the Illinois Appellate Court in 2011. Abusharif is currently incarcerated at Logan Correctional Center.
