2019Nicolae Lungu lived in the village of Săgeata in Buzău County, Romania. He lived in a house with his mother.
He had two brothers and a sister. He worked in the field and in the forest.
People who knew him said he often cursed and yelled at his mother. When he drank alcohol, he was cruel and beat her.
On 18 August 2019 at the Psychiatry and Safety Hospital Săpoca in Buzău County, Romania, 38-year-old patient Nicolae Lungu attacked other patients using a metal stand for infusions. The attack took place in the early morning hours and was captured on the hospital's surveillance cameras. He broke a window and jumped into the hospital courtyard, where police detained him.
Around 3:00 a.m., Lungu first struck patients in the men's room. Three patients were hit there and died at the scene. He then went to the women's department and struck ten patients. One of those women died the same day. Many victims could not resist because they were unconscious or tied to beds.
As a result of the attack, seven people died and six were injured. Initial reports said three people were killed at the scene and ten were injured. One injured person died later at Buzău County Hospital the same day. An 88-year-old woman died on 19 August 2019, a 79-year-old woman died on 26 August 2019, and a 74-year-old man died on 20 September 2019.
