1991Nicholas Vernage was born in 1965. Very little is known about his early life and childhood. He grew up in a challenging environment in East London, Ontario, Canada. As a young man, he often found himself in trouble with the law. In 1987, he faced his first significant legal troubles. He was arrested for a series of robberies and was sentenced to seven years in prison.
During his time in prison, Nicholas became very angry, particularly toward police officers. Those who were with him in prison noted that his attitude changed. He went from being a young, reckless person to someone consumed by a deep hatred of law enforcement. He was quoted as saying he wanted to "kill all coppers," which reflected his growing obsession with violence against the police.
Upon his release from prison in October 1991, Vernage began a crime spree very quickly. He burgled multiple homes, relied on weapons, and became increasingly violent. His behavior escalated further as he committed more crimes that would eventually lead to serious consequences. His state of mind, influenced by his time in prison and his hatred of the police, played a critical role in his actions after he was released.
On November 21, 1991, Nicholas Vernage began a series of violent crimes in East London, Ontario, Canada, that would end in murder. His first victim was Lorna Bogle, his girlfriend. He entered her home while wearing a balaclava and armed with a knife. After accusing her of not writing to him during his time in prison, he stabbed her 21 times.
Three days later, on November 24, Vernage killed Javaid Iqbal, a 37-year-old part-time mini-cab driver. Iqbal came home to find Vernage burglarizing his flat. When Iqbal tried to confront him, Vernage stabbed him in the chest, causing his death.
The final murder occurred on November 28. Vernage was attempting to steal from a home in Higham Hill Road, Walthamstow, when he was confronted by Sergeant Alan King, a policeman. Vernage attacked King, stabbing him multiple times in the head, neck, and chest. Despite King's efforts to seek help, he died from his injuries.
Vernage was arrested the following day after he stabbed two police officers who had approached his car. He was later sentenced to life in prison for his crimes.
