Naceur Damergi, born in 1944 in Tunis, Tunisia, was the illegitimate son of a prostitute named Houria. His mother was imprisoned during her pregnancy, leading to his birth at Charles Nicolle Hospital in Tunis during the French protectorate period. After her release, Houria married a farmer, registering Naceur under her husband's name. Damergi did not meet his biological father until he was thirty years old.

Described as intelligent and fluent in French, Damergi attended the Bourguiba Children's School but left his education early to work in agriculture, where he found financial success. In 1964, he became engaged to his cousin and traveled to France. Upon his return in 1968, he discovered that his fiancée had married another man, an event that reportedly had a profound impact on him.

murder story

Damergi's criminal activities began on June 15, 1987, when he lured a child named Muhammad Ali to his farm under the pretense of helping with almond harvesting. When Ali resisted Damergi's advances, Damergi strangled him and buried his body on the farm. This marked the beginning of a series of heinous crimes where he kidnapped, raped, and murdered fourteen minors in the Nabeul region between 1987 and 1988. His victims ranged in age from 10 to 18 years.

One notable victim was his ex-fiancée's 13-year-old son, Ramzi, whom he mutilated before murdering on January 26, 1988. Damergi's method involved luring children to his farm, where he would commit his crimes and subsequently bury their bodies.

Prior to his apprehension, several suspects were arrested, including Damergi himself; however, he was released due to a lack of evidence. He was arrested a second time on November 27, 1989, after a routine road check near Hammamet revealed a blood-stained knife in his possession. Following his confession, authorities discovered twelve bodies buried in a nearby forest. The victims were aged between seven and twenty years old.

During his trial, no lawyers were willing to defend him, prompting the court to assign legal representation. Damergi's request for clemency was denied by President Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali, reflecting the public's outrage over his crimes.

On November 17, 1990, at 3:15 a.m., Naceur Damergi was executed by hanging at Nador Prison in Tunis. His execution was notably prolonged, taking thirteen minutes instead of the usual four or five. He was the last person to be executed in Tunisia, as the country has since observed a de facto moratorium on capital punishment.
